This is a very old stitch, commonly known as a "Sailmakers Darn" or stitch.
Two errors people make, not enough bite in the cloth along the "cut" and two, people pull it up far to tight. When heaved up real tight it puckers the repair, very bad. Just a few of the comments that could be made about the stitch.
