Okay folks, game on.  Just had an email from Dan telling me he had this forum set up for people who want to know how to make picture frames from decorative knots.  Well, I've been making them for years and have one in progress that's at the right point to start taking pictures.  So as soon as he tells me how to post the pictures, I'll be doing just that.

This frame is in the "MEDIUM" size; long measurement is two feet.  I joined some 1x5 pine cut to the size of the picture and it's mat.  The wood is primed and painted.  Frankly, I haven't decided if I'm going to go the canvas route or glue the knots straight to the wood but I'll say a lot about that as I go along.

I suppose the first thing to say about making a frame is that you need to know where you're going before you try to go there and that's not necessarily easy to figure out.

For example; I have a lovely canvas of a contemporary vessel under sail that looks like it's about to be swamped.  The seas are terribly rough but the worst of it was because of the compression that occurs in a telephoto lense.  The ship wasn't in any distress but it's a heck of a picture.

Anyway, I had a mat made for it and that's where my measurements begin and that's what I mean when I say you need to know where your going before you start.

The second measurement you need is how wide the frame will be.  Most  commercial frame makers will tell you that the frame should compliment the picture rather than compete with it.  Well, when it comes to knotting frames, that's no longer the truth.  We make our frames to be decorative items all on their own.  So the bigger and more austentatious, the better.

Okay, now I'll wait for Dan to tell me how to get the pictures posted.  I've got three more pieces to tie and I'll be mounting all the sennits.  Then I begin the detail work and that's when things get crazy.

Hope I can deal with your questions and we can help each other along the way.  I've made a lot of frames but certainly don't have all the answers.

Jerry
