While a mandrel with pins at the bight boundary facilitate braiding a knot in several ways, I think the primary advantage is the ease of dealing with the concept of bight increment and progression. The fact that the bight increment is equal to the number of parts in a knot is fundamental to all knots, having the control over it with the bight pins is the greatest advantage for those such as the "quick start" and interweaves. You can just count pins and the structure of the knot ia established as you braid. An almost universal mandrel for a given number of bight can be made by placing a series of spaced boundary holes for the pins on one end of the mandrel for any number of parts or to get a longer pitch to increase the circumference when you need a "looser" knot to slide into place over another knot or on strap work.

hello Sidney...
....for most of the turk's heads i make i don't use
pins but i am finding that there are a few new knots
i'm trying to make that i don't think i can make them
without using pins!!...(barber pole pineapple knot and
hound's tooth pineapple knot)....i have ordered some
cribbage board pegs and i'll be making some mandrels
just for these knots....i'll post some photos when they
are made...

I am familar with the full barber pole, but what is the pineapple version. I would also appreciate a hint about the hounds tooth pineapple, as it is new to me.
Thank you

hello Sidney...
....we have been making dog leads/leashes at
the Anchorage Knot Tyers' Club:

 http://www.knotical-arts.com/info.html

....we have been making them with several different braids:

...the first braid is the hound's tooth weave...the
second braid is the barber pole (candy cane) weave
....there are some excellent instructions for the
barber pole knot in Round Knots and Braids by Ron
Edwards (pages 88-89) but i think i will have to make
a special mandrel for it?!...

....a while back someone posted a photo of the
hound's tooth pineapple type knot:

....i don't have the instructions for this one...i'm hoping
someone can tell me more about it...(maybe a longer version too??!)...

....these will be the matching weave/knots that cover the ends
of the loops in the dog leads:

(plastic lace from plastic kangaroos!...)
