After bringing the needle from Front to Back (not back to front as usual), bring the needle to the Left (not right) to avoid twisting the loop you are tying into. Complete the knot by as usual  BUT tie  the half hitch around the single right hand strand (instead of both strands) of the loop you are tying into. This completes the square knot (reef knot, flat knot).
 Blanford's "Netmaking" book confirms that this method is one used in
finer work. Tony
