....we use 3mm-6mm(+-!??) "mountain climbing type" rope as the
core....plastic lace (from plastic kangaroos!) and we have been
making them with 4-12 strand braids ....length to suit the dog, etc...
pineapple knots (from 13x6...17x6...19x6 turk's head knots...etc)
...to hide the "guts"....
...an interesting lesson in tying these dog leads pineapple knots
is that if the base turk's head knot
is an 11x6 turk's head the inside turk's head will be a 9x6
turk's head....which can't be tyed!!...(type 1 pineapple knot...)
....it just doesn't work!
......but you can tye a 2-pass type 3 pineapple knot from an
11x6 turk's head!.....so think things out!!...etc...some "type 1"
pineapple knots just can't be made!!..
thimbles and snap hooks to match!!
...these dog leads are fairly easy to make and very secure...we
are practicing with plastic lace and soon we will be making them
in leather lace!...
...here are just a few of the 8-strand
braids you can use to make the dog leads/leashes!:
...here is a 12-strand "pineapple knot weave" braid
that is in Round Knots and Braids by Ron Edwards...
...it is around 6mm mountain climbing type rope....
...a very nice braid for a dog lead!!...
...here are a couple of 4-strand braids for a
leash for a very small dog!:
...around 3mm (1/8") paracord...
...the top is made from "Pro-Lace" from Tandy...a
synthetic leather lace...
...the bottom is plastic lace
...you can make the dog leashes/leads from
3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm + "mountain climbing" type
rope as the core...
...and 4-strand, 5-strand, 6-strand, 7-strand, 8-strand, 9-strand,
10-strand, 11-strand, 12-strand + braids....with dozens of design
have fun braiding!...

Have you ever used gutted paracord as the covering for a leash's braid? I used 4 strands of paracord when I made my first leash, but like the idea of covering a much larger diameter core with a multi strand braid.
just a thought.... _________________ --

...i imagine there is no limit to the types of material
you can use to make these dog leashes/leads?!!...i've
found that some braids do not need a core but some
do...we use 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm mountain climbing
type ropes for the cores...550 parachute cord is easily
available in dozens of colors so it should be no problem
to make a dog lead with this cord....if you have made
some please post a photo!!....
...right now i'm working on a couple of dog leads: barber
pole braid and hound's tooth braid...hopefully they will
be done soon and i'll post some photos...
